Midi message to control B-Step from Ableton

Post by SONICrider » 17 May 2015, 08:51

Hi,

I got my B-Step since yesterday & I must say it is an awesome tool... Thinking about future use I wonna know if I can control the B-Step with midi messages from Ableton....

Example 1: I want to start and stop de B-Step at a certain point during my performance (and or)
Example 2: I want to change certain settings to change the way B-Step plays back sequences>

I hope my question is clear enough to answer.

Thanks!!

Kind regard Jurgen

Hi Jurgen,

thanks for using B-Step.

Yes, you can control B-Step via MIDI from Ableton, but you can not (directly) stop B-Step via MIDI.

To "stop" B-Step via MIDI you can set up a few workarounds:

1. Mute all bars via MIDI will "stop" the note output and keeps the sequence playback/order.
Setup: assign all "bar mutes" to one CC number (midi learn mode 1:n).
Or: assign the global mute button to one CC number (1:1) - much simpler ;-)

2. Set an empty bar to solo via MIDI will also "stop" the output and continues the sequence after solo-release at the bar after the soloed one.
Setup: assign an empty bar to one controller number (midi learn mode 1:1 (default)).

Maybe Bar Skip can also do something useful for you.

How to MIDI learn?
Please take a look at this part in the manual: http://manual.b-step.monoplugs.com/conr ... midi-learn

To assign more than one element (e.g. multiple "bar mutes") to one controller see "Learn Modes: 1:n". You can also find a short video about the 1:n-mode.
NOTE: in the MIDI IO settings keep "In Host Routing" as receive port (MIDI learn section) if you like to send CC messages from Ableton to B-Step.

Also it is possible to change the sequence step based instead of whole bars.

Does this help?
